South Sudan’s Ministry of Health has announced an emergency budget of approximately USD 7.3 million to implement a 90-day plan aimed at strengthening preparedness and response measures against any potential Ebola outbreak in the country.
The ministry said the plan includes several key interventions, including enhancing infection prevention and control systems, strengthening surveillance and monitoring mechanisms, improving rapid response infrastructure, and establishing isolation centres across the country.
Minister of Health Luka Thompson Thoan stated that the government will finance 30 percent of the budget, while international partners are expected to cover the remaining 70 percent.
The minister added that the efforts of supporting partners are being coordinated through the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Africa, noting that a significant portion of the required funding has already been mobilised.
The Ministry of Health emphasized that the plan is part of broader efforts to raise the country’s level of preparedness and strengthen the health sector’s capacity to respond rapidly to any potential cases, particularly amid growing concerns over the spread of the virus in neighbouring countries.
