South Sudan’s Ministry of Health, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), convened a high-level meeting bringing together health sector partners and relevant stakeholders to discuss preparedness measures against any potential Ebola outbreak in the country.

The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Health, Luka Thompson Thoan, during which participants reviewed the evolving Ebola situation in both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, while also assessing South Sudan’s current level of preparedness and response plans for the coming period.

The meeting emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination between the government and international partners to ensure a rapid and effective response to any potential Ebola cases, with particular focus on addressing gaps related to health services, logistics, border management, and community awareness.

The Minister of Health stated that the government is treating the Ebola threat with utmost seriousness, noting that the country remains on high alert and that the ministry has activated daily coordination meetings to monitor the health situation and ensure operational readiness and early response measures.

Meanwhile, the WHO Representative in South Sudan, Dr. Humphrey Karamagi, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting government efforts to strengthen early detection and rapid response capacities. He called for a multi-sectoral approach involving health, water and sanitation, logistics, border management, and community engagement systems.

Participants at the meeting also stressed the importance of early investment in preparedness and prevention measures, describing them as essential steps to protect communities and reduce the risk of the virus spreading within the country.
