The embassies of Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with the European Union delegation, have issued a stark warning over what they describe as the most serious political and security deterioration in South Sudan since the 2018 peace agreement, according to an assessment by the head of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC).
In a joint statement, the international partners called for the immediate reversal of the decision to place First Vice President Riek Machar under house arrest. They urged President Salva Kiir and all political leaders to urgently return to the negotiating table to reach a comprehensive political solution.
The statement also expressed deep concern over remarks made on April 26 by a member of the transitional government, who reportedly described certain counties as “friendly” and others as “hostile.” The embassies warned that such divisive rhetoric poses a serious threat to national unity.
The signatories reiterated their call for an end to violence as a means of achieving political gains and urged all parties to refrain from unilateral actions that could further destabilize the already fragile political landscape.
