The National Police in Unity State, Leer County, have trained 20 police officers in investigation, evidence collection, and court submission procedures, with support from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the Norwegian Embassy in Juba.

Residents of Leer County are eagerly looking forward to achieving justice in their remote area, far from the state capital, Bentiu. The arrival of a mobile court is scheduled for next May, and before this happens, police forces must be trained in investigation and evidence collection to ensure the law is enforced with the necessary skills for judicial procedures.

One of the police investigators, John Malieth, stated that this training will help facilitate their tasks. He mentioned that they are preparing investigators in the county to know how to collect evidence and handle cases until they reach the court. He added, “Without justice and accountability, we cannot expect to achieve the lasting peace that everyone desires.”

John Bhudha, a Justice Advisor with UNMISS, explained: “We want police officers to become proficient in handling common cases here, such as sexual violence, gender-based violence, and conflict-related human rights violations. Their thorough investigations will lay the foundation for the upcoming mobile court to hear and rule on these cases.”

The trainees expressed their satisfaction with the sessions they attended. Koong Baliu Deng, one of the course graduates, said, “We have definitely improved and learned new skills, and this knowledge will help us perform much better,” as he feels ready for the arrival of the long-awaited mobile court.
