The national ministry of health in South Sudan has inaugurated a fully equipped health facility in the Central Equatoria state at Nimule to advance screening for deadly infectious diseases at the border point amid the ongoing Ebola and mpox outbreak in the neighboring Uganda and Kenya.
The health authorities in South Sudan have been in Hight alert for any epidemics for the last two months, when there was Ebola and mpox cases were reported in the neighboring countries Kenya, Uganda and DRC and central republic
The facility has a capacity of ten bed for isolations patients, with well-equipped laboratory and services like ultrasounds among others, according to the official in the ministry the facility was funded by donation from the European union and as construction by the intergovernmental organist ion IGAD
The undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Harrit Pasquale Akello, said that the facility will serve as a significant screening center for simulation and preparedness for disease outbreaks in the country that may be exported or imported between Uganda and South Sudan.
Dr. Akello also affirmed that the center will provide treatment for any kind of infectious disease.
The center is well equipped, and it has all the needed equipment, including well-equipped laboratory equipment like ultrasounds and other key equipment needed, and it is built in the border to serve both countries, she said.
Furthermore, Dr. Akello said that the development is crucial in addressing public health emergencies, especially those that come from across the borders. She added that the facility exists at the moment when South Sudan is facing health crises with two disease outbreaks, te mpox and cholera. She also said the facility will build confidence in fighting health emergencies at the border entry point and the country as a whole.
We have learned a lot from the COVID-19 experiences. I remembered when we received the first case and we did not know how to manage the case; the hospital was prepared, and people were running up and down.
But building this facility builds confidence among the health workers to be able to manage any kind of infectious disease.
A total of nine cases have been confirmed since 2 February 225 of Sudan virus disease of ebolavirus, including one death that has been reported from Uganda since the outbreak was announced in the 3
Meanwhile, Uganda is struggling with an mpox outbreak and has so far recorded 229 cases, while 13 have died since July 224.
South Sudan confirmed its first case in February this year and declared the outbreak of the mpox after the contagious disease was detected in the Republic of the Congo and Uganda.
