The South Sudan national basketball team has secured its qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations finals with merit, set to take place later this year.
The qualifiers for Groups 1 and 3 were held at Ibn Yassin Hall in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, from February 12 to 23. The Bright Stars’ group included host nation Morocco, Mali, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

South Sudan triumphed in its first match against host Morocco with a score of 89-58 but narrowly lost to Mali 72-75.
In their third and final qualifier match, they defeated the Democratic Republic of the Congo 89-58, finishing at the top of their group and securing a well-deserved qualification to the continental finals for the second time in their history.

The Angolan capital, Luanda, will host the Africa Cup of Nations finals from August 12 to 24. The tournament lineup is now complete, featuring 16 teams: South Sudan, Egypt, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Senegal, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Tunisia, Madagascar, Mali, Guinea, Rwanda, Uganda, Nigeria, Cape Verde, and Libya.

It is worth noting that Tunisia is the reigning champion, having won the last edition of the tournament in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2021, when they defeated Côte d’Ivoire in the final.
