Eu assured South Sudan its support for the country towards peace and democratic transition and stable country, this came in the event of launching of the policy briefing in juba Wednesday
The EU deputy head of delegation Lothar jachke these made the commitment in the event on Wednesday
Let’s take the first concrete step with election accompanied by strong civil society he said
Further he added its possible to organize election in December 2026 and to have an inclusive transparent electoral process if the political decision are made the famous ten addressed and most importantly the national election commission allowed to present its own timeline for preparing the election and then deliver on them jachke added
Additionally, the Eu envoy confirmed the union support the election worldwide by delivering the electoral assistant and observation because election gave citizen sense of participation in the formation of the government of their country
“They legitimize those who govern and create accountability. Those who are elected have not won a prize but bear responsibility to serve the public. And are accountable to the public,” he added.
Jachke expressed his concern for the lack of the plan and how South Sudan government to handle the transitional period accounting the need for the raising voice about the coming election to avoid mistake of the previous times
“Raising voices remains important, essential for a conducive environment, for political and civic space which any democracy needs like a fish needs water, like a flower needs the rain, like we need oxygen,” he said.
Jachke also stated that lack of progress as we see so far, and political will are discouraging while progress will be conducive to international support he said
He points out that Eu was the first and will remain he largest donor for the creating conducive environment to conduct election s
“But elections are not an objective in itself, they should lead to something, to a peaceful and stable and democratic country. They will certainly lead to the end of the transitional period.”
He also assured that EU is the strongest supporter of peace since the signing of the first peace agreement in the 2015
“Our overriding objective is peace. We also support the ongoing Tumaini talks with a view to come to a more inclusive peace process,” he said.
