Rising Commodity Prices in Twic East County

Residents of Panyagoor, the capital of Twic East County in Jonglei State, are alarmed by a significant surge in the prices of essential goods, attributing the situation to rising inflation. Many locals have voiced their struggles to afford basic necessities, with prices for items like beans and sugar doubling in just a week. One resident highlighted that a cup of beans now costs SSP 6,000, a stark increase from SSP 3,000, while the price of oil has also surged dramatically. The community is urging the government to take action to alleviate their financial burden.

The price hikes have been particularly severe, with reports indicating that a 50-kg bag of sorghum has skyrocketed from SSP 100,000 to SSP 250,000. Residents are increasingly concerned about the impact of these rising costs on their daily lives, with one local stating that the situation is becoming unbearable. The community is calling for government intervention, specifically requesting subsidies for basic food items to help ease the financial strain on families.

Local business owners have confirmed that the price increases are largely due to transportation challenges, as Panyagoor is currently cut off from Bor by road. This has forced residents to rely on slower and more expensive means of transport, such as motorboats and canoes, to receive supplies. The ongoing situation has left many in the community suffering, and efforts to reach local government officials for comment have been unsuccessful, leaving residents feeling unheard and desperate for assistance.
