Sudan has regained its membership in the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). In January, Lawrence Korbandy, IGAD’s special envoy, will make his first official visit to Port Sudan since Sudan’s suspension from the organization.
Korbandy told Sudan Tribune, “Sudan’s return to the organization is vital,” emphasizing the significance of Sudan’s role within the regional bloc and the necessity of achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Sudan Tribune was informed by Sudanese diplomatic sources that Sudan will be allowed to rejoin IGAD after an 11-month suspension.
Last January, Sudan objected to decisions made during an IGAD session in Uganda by suspending its membership. Ismail Omar Guelleh, the President of Djibouti and Chairman of IGAD, was informed of the decision by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council and Commander of the Armed Forces. Korbandy had also made an unexpected visit to Port Sudan.
