Juba – Al-Wadi Newspaper

The Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare in South Sudan has launched a comprehensive review of the Family Bill, in coordination with a number of key partners, including United Nations agencies, civil society organizations, and government officials. This initiative aims to strengthen family rights and social protection within a more just and inclusive legal framework.

The initiative reflects the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to reinforcing the social fabric of the family, promoting principles of equality and social justice, and ensuring a supportive legal environment for all family members—especially women, children, and vulnerable groups.

The Ministry emphasized that this collaborative review is a national effort that demonstrates strong political will to develop legislation that addresses current societal challenges and realistically meets the needs of citizens in a fair and equitable manner.

A wide range of local and international organizations are participating in this effort, including: UN Women, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Save the Children, CARE South Sudan, EVE Organization for Women Development, Women Empowerment Initiatives, South Sudanese Women Intellectuals Forum, YMCA, Vision for Humanity, and Women for Justice and Equality, as well as the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and other civil society organizations actively engaged in issues related to family and gender.

The project aims to establish a legal framework that enhances justice and gender equality, ensures social protection for all family members, and keeps pace with the social and cultural transformations within the country.

The Ministry stated that the final draft of the bill will be the result of broad consultations with various segments of society and is expected to contribute to building a more just and stable community that upholds the values of dignity and mutual respect within families.

The review process is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, paving the way for the final draft to be submitted to the relevant legislative bodies for approval.
