The First Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, held an important meeting with the Chairperson of the Revitalized Peace Agreement Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC), Ambassador Major General Charles Tai Gituai. The meeting discussed key issues related to the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement, which was revitalized.

The issues discussed included public financial management, security arrangements, unification and deployment of forces, national security law, the humanitarian situation, and the population census. They also discussed the ongoing process of drafting the permanent constitution as one of the key factors for achieving lasting stability through peaceful transition and good governance, along with other prerequisites set out in the 2018 peace agreement.

Dr. Machar briefed the R-JMEC Chair on the many challenges facing the implementation processes and emphasized the need for the signatory parties to increase the percentage of implemented activities in order to convince partners, donors, and friends of South Sudan to assist in completing the remaining tasks.

The meeting also underscored the importance of conducting the population census in the country, which is one of the essential conditions for holding free, fair, democratic, and inclusive elections at the end of the extended period.

Regarding the Tumaini Initiative, the First Vice President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that holdout groups become part of the Revitalized Government of National Unity and participate in the ongoing processes.

“We would like to see them participating in the process for an inclusive government,” he added.

In a statement to the press after the meeting, Ambassador Charles Tai Gituai said that he came to brief the First Vice President on the status of implementing issues related to Chapter 2 of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, particularly security arrangements, among other matters.

The Chairperson of R-JMEC also commended the First Vice President for successfully chairing the recently concluded 8th Governor’s Forum and encouraged the South Sudanese government to implement the resolutions of the forum.

R-JMEC is an entity responsible for monitoring and overseeing all aspects of the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement. Its tasks include monitoring the performance and tasks of the Transitional Government of National Unity (RT-GoNU), including the adherence of the parties to agreed timelines and implementation schedules.
