Freza Nanotech Limited, a startup from Uganda, has won the 2024 Innovation Award from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for developing an innovative nanotechnology-based solution to extend the shelf life of fruits and reduce post-harvest losses. The award ceremony was held at FAO headquarters during the 176th session of the FAO Council in Rome.
Freza Nanotech’s groundbreaking technology employs an organic formulation that inhibits the activity of phospholipase D, an enzyme associated with fruit ripening, extending the shelf life of fruits by up to 30 days. This emission-free solution reduces waste and increases the availability of fresh produce for consumers.
This technology benefits both farmers and consumers, making it impactful on food security, economic development, and environmental sustainability.

During the ceremony, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said, “Their efforts demonstrate that agrifood systems can be both productive and sustainable, contributing to improved nutrition and livelihoods in Uganda and beyond.” He added, “Highlighting best practices and innovative solutions, such as those by Freza Nanotech, is crucial due to their positive impact on production, nutrition, the environment, and livelihoods. They also contribute to the Four Betters: Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life – leaving no one behind.”
The company’s technology is especially beneficial for small-scale farmers in Uganda by reducing post-harvest losses, improving productivity, and stabilizing fruit prices. Consumers benefit from increased access to fresh produce at affordable prices, while the environment benefits from reduced food waste and lower emissions associated with food spoilage.
Mugisha Gift Arnold, CEO and Co-Founder of Freza Nanotech, emphasized that winning the award not only recognizes the team’s commitment but also highlights how innovative technological solutions can address global challenges, particularly in food security and sustainability. He noted that the technology developed by the company contributes to improving food availability and supporting economic growth, making a tangible difference in people’s daily lives.
The FAO Innovation Award is part of the FAO Awards Program, which recognizes organizations, individuals, and institutions whose innovations transform agrifood systems and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The ceremony at the FAO Council underscores the importance of innovation in tackling global challenges and advancing sustainable agricultural development worldwide.
