President Salva Kiir Mayardit has departed for Arusha, Tanzania, to attend the 24th Ordinary Summit of the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State and Government.
This high-level summit gathers regional leaders to discuss and evaluate critical issues shaping the future of East Africa.
#Presidential Press Secretary Lily Adhieu Martin Manyiel confirmed that President Kiir, as the current chairperson of the bloc, will join his counterparts in Arusha, where he will preside over the summit and hand over the bloc’s leadership to the incoming chairperson, who will be announced during today’s deliberations.
Ms. Lily noted that during his tenure, the President worked to advance peace, security, and regional stability in the Great Lakes region through dialogue with the leaders of Rwanda, Burundi, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to resolve political and border issues affecting these nations.
She added that the EAC Heads of State will discuss proposals for drafting a political federation constitution, coinciding with celebrations of the bloc’s 25th anniversary.
This summit, held to commemorate the EAC’s 25th anniversary, serves as a platform to review achievements from the past and chart a course for deeper regional integration.
Key agenda items include strengthening the region’s economic resilience, advancing peace and security, and developing mechanisms to promote intra-regional trade and development.
While in Arusha, the President is also expected to engage with regional leaders on the sidelines of the summit to discuss the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and the ongoing Tumaini Peace Initiative in Nairobi, Kenya, involving dissenting groups.
