According to the rights organization Save the children, over 21,000, or around 52%, are children, many of whom have had to relocate more than once in the previous two years.

The most recent data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) indicates that this is the largest migration surge since January 2023.

Many children have been compelled to seek safety in overcrowded schools that have been converted into shelters or with host families, frequently with little to no access to food, clean water, or medical treatment.

Save the Children called for complete, unrestricted access for relief workers and life-saving supplies across Haiti, particularly in Port-au-Prince, to tackle hunger and severe acute malnutrition, and urged all parties to do everything possible to protect children.

According to the UN, the number of minors recruited by gangs in Haiti has increased by 70% in the last year, fueling the latest wave of violence that is driving displacement. Many of these children were forced to join gangs, while others did it for survival.

Violence erupted in the capital after Haiti sacked and replaced its interim prime minister, amid political infighting and corruption charges against members of a transitional council formed to restore democratic order in Haiti.

The United Nations says that gangs control 85% of the city. A Kenyan-led police effort has failed to shift the balance of power on the ground.
