Radio Miraya Celebrates 19th Anniversary Amid Widespread Praise from South Sudanese Listeners

Juba – Al-Wadi Newspaper

Radio Miraya, one of the most prominent media voices in South Sudan, has marked 19 years since its launch, receiving widespread praise from listeners across the country. Many citizens described the station as a trusted and influential platform that has raised public awareness and kept pace with national issues since independence.

The anniversary celebrations were held in the capital Juba, featuring a live broadcast from the Women’s Union Centre. The event brought together journalists, public figures, civil society representatives, and a large audience of devoted listeners who actively engaged with the presenters through live calls and messages from various states.

The celebration included artistic and cultural performances, with readings of poems and national songs that have marked key moments in South Sudan’s history. Organizers described the occasion as a “journey through memory” that tells the story of media and national resilience.

Laurence Ladu Luka, a volunteer teacher, shared his long-standing connection with Radio Miraya, which began in 2012 when he was a student in Yei. “I used to regularly follow shows like Miraya Breakfast, Nationwide, and Roundtable Discussions. They deepened my interest in public affairs, and I still listen to them today,” he said. “I even participated in a radio program once, where I spoke about waste management issues in the capital — an experience I’ll always remember,” he added proudly.

From the younger generation, Apen Abraham, a student at Darling Wisdom Academy, expressed her gratitude for the station’s role in reaching remote communities. “Even though you broadcast from studios far away, you give a voice to the voiceless and deliver reliable information to distant villages. Your impact is significant, and we hope it continues,” she said.

Her classmate Safa Sarif shared how the live broadcast left a strong impression on her. “It turned me into a fan of Miraya. I now realize the importance of radio as a tool for education and awareness, and I’ll make sure to follow it regularly,” she said, pointing to the solar-powered radio device distributed to attendees during the event.

For Patricia Okoed, Head of Programming at Radio Miraya, these testimonials are a reflection of the station’s core mission. “What makes us unique is our ability to reach more than 80% of the country’s population, more than any other outlet. Our microphones are open to everyone who wants to share their story and voice with South Sudan,” she affirmed.

It’s worth noting that Radio Miraya is operated by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and plays a pivotal role in covering political, social, and cultural issues. The station remains one of the most listened-to and influential media platforms in the country.
