The National Elections Commission (NEC) this week launched an advanced training program targeting the development of master trainers in civic education, as part of its broader efforts to support electoral awareness across South Sudan.
The program is being held in two phases in Juba—from June 10 to 13 and June 17 to 20, 2025—with the participation of 50 trainees, including NEC staff, members of State High Elections Committees (SHEC), and representatives from government institutions and civil society organizations.
In an official statement, the NEC said the training is based on its Civic and Voter Education Strategy, and is conducted with support from the United Nations Integrated Electoral Assistance Team (UN IEAT). The NEC’s training manual covers five core topics: democracy, governance, human rights, elections, and peacebuilding, along with a complementary module to enhance the presentation and facilitation skills of civic educators.
This initiative aims to unify the efforts of the NEC, state-level election committees, civil society, and other stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and effective approach to civic education, supporting a transparent, inclusive, and peaceful electoral process.
The commission affirmed that the program will build the capacities of 50 master trainers in two cohorts, who will then lead civic education initiatives at the state and county levels.
In a statement, Commissioner Thabo Abosuh Ayang, who is responsible for civic and voter education at the NEC, stressed that strong partnerships with state institutions, civil society, media, and political parties will be key to the success of the national civic education program.
He added: “We are collectively working to promote a culture of political participation to ensure fair and credible elections that reflect the aspirations of the people of South Sudan.”
