South Sudan’s Vice President and Chairperson of the Infrastructure Cluster, H.E. Gen. Taban Deng Gai, received the new British Ambassador to South Sudan, Mr. David Ashley, in Juba today. The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation between South Sudan and the United Kingdom, particularly in areas of development and stability support.

At the outset of the meeting, Vice President Taban welcomed Ambassador Ashley and expressed appreciation for the United Kingdom’s continued support to South Sudan, especially in the sectors of humanitarian aid, education, and healthcare. He described the UK’s partnership as a cornerstone in the country’s path toward national development.
The Vice President reaffirmed the Government of South Sudan’s full commitment to implementing the Revitalized Peace Agreement, with particular emphasis on Chapter II concerning security arrangements, which he described as fundamental to ensuring lasting peace.
He called on the international community to support practical steps toward the integration of opposition forces into a unified national army, viewing it as a key measure to prevent renewed violence and to pave the way for a stable democratic transition.
“In appreciating the international community’s push for political dialogue, we also stress the importance of taking concrete actions—such as accelerating military integration—as the most effective way to build a unified army and achieve long-term stability,” the Vice President stated.
According to a statement from the Press Unit of the Office of the Vice President – Infrastructure Cluster, Ambassador Ashley reaffirmed the UK’s ongoing commitment to supporting essential aid programs in South Sudan. He acknowledged the progress made in implementing the peace agreement and emphasized the need for continued political dialogue among stakeholders to avoid setbacks on the road to national stability.
