Juba – Al-Wadi Newspaper

The Government of Western Equatoria State has issued a strong condemnation of a recent assault on a female staff member of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) by two members of the organized forces in Yambio. The state confirmed that the perpetrators have been identified and are currently in military custody in the city.

In an official statement signed by the Acting Governor, James Severino Morris, and obtained by Al-Mawqif, the government described the incident, which occurred on Monday, as “a disgraceful and inhumane act,” noting that the victim was subjected to direct physical assault.

“This act is not only a blatant violation of human rights and dignity, but also a serious breach of international cooperation principles and the Status of Forces Agreement signed between the Government of the Republic of South Sudan and the United Nations,” the statement read.

The state government extended its sincere apologies to the assaulted staff member and her family, as well as to all members of UNMISS, affirming its full commitment to ensuring justice and accountability.

According to the statement, a prompt and thorough investigation into the incident has been launched, with the aim of applying the law and enforcing appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with military protocols and national legislation.

The statement concluded: “Western Equatoria State remains committed to promoting peaceful and constructive partnerships with all international stakeholders and will not tolerate any actions or behavior that undermine these relations—particularly those targeting women and personnel engaged in humanitarian or UN duties.”

The government also issued a stern warning to all members of the organized forces, cautioning against any inhumane treatment of international organization staff or civilians. It stressed that any misconduct would be dealt with with the utmost seriousness.
