The Minister of Animal Resources and Fisheries in South Sudan, Onyoti Adigo Nyikwec, has called for transforming livestock and fish resources into marketable products in order to enhance trade, achieve food security, and increase economic growth in the country.
Speaking during the opening of the First National Trade Forum in Juba on April 24, the minister stressed the importance of developing the livestock and fisheries sectors. He said: “We have plenty of cattle and livestock, but we need to improve the sector and turn it into a profitable business that benefits everyone.”
The minister added that South Sudan faces challenges such as weak infrastructure, lack of electricity, and the absence of facilities for storing and processing products. He noted that fish from South Sudan is often purchased by neighboring countries like Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it is processed and resold under foreign brands.
He urged the establishment of facilities to package and preserve fish, meat, and milk according to international standards, which would help export local products and increase national revenue.
The minister affirmed that these efforts are part of the government’s plan to diversify the economy away from oil dependence and achieve sustainable development.
