Ambassador Agnes Oswaha, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, led South Sudan’s delegation to the 24th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, held today in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
During the session, the Executive Council elected Algeria as the representative of North Africa to the Peace and Security Council, Benin to the African Union Commission on International Law, and Chad to the African Space Council.
The Council also discussed a report on the election of the Commissioner for Economic Development, Tourism, Trade, Industry, and Mining (ETTIM) and the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation (ESTI). Additionally, reports from the Panel of Eminent African Personalities and the Bureau of the Executive Council were reviewed.
Ambassador Oswaha conveyed greetings and congratulations on behalf of Amb. Mundaya Simeon K. Guma, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan, to the newly elected officials, including Tete Antonio, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Angola and newly elected Chairperson of the Executive Council, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the new Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and all newly elected members.
She also expressed her gratitude to the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia for the warm reception and generous hospitality extended to the South Sudanese delegation.
During discussions related to the elections, Ambassador Oswaha reaffirmed South Sudan’s commitment to African unity, based on mutual understanding and appreciation of the positions of all member states. She stated:
“The Republic of South Sudan is committed to the stability and development of the African continent. Therefore, South Sudan recommends a peaceful solution that would enable the Bureau to address the challenges at hand.”
