A fire has destroyed several civilian properties in the Faluj area of Malut County, Upper Nile State. Local authorities cited negligence and strong winds as major contributing factors to the injuries and destruction of property.
According to Radio Tamazuj on Saturday, the fire broke out in a home near Al Jou market after a woman reportedly left her children unattended while cooking, which led to the fire, according to Yohanna Monybai, Director of Faluj Payam.
The flames quickly spread to nearby houses due to strong winds, resulting in the destruction of buildings made from local materials. Monybai told Radio Tamazuj that oil companies operating in the area provided support by sending two water trucks to help extinguish the fire. “Their swift response prevented a larger disaster,” he emphasized, noting that the fire was put out before reaching nearby oil wells. He described the property losses as significant.
Monybai confirmed that no lives were lost, and a committee was formed to assess the damage and take preventive measures to avoid a recurrence of the incident. He said, “Citizens cannot build houses using strong materials. Even the kitchen where the fire started was made from local materials.”
The Director of Malut County Police, Deng Fesh, confirmed that the impact of the fire was very severe and said that legal proceedings had been initiated to determine responsibility for the incident. He added that initial investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, and he also confirmed that no fatalities occurred due to the fire.
