South Sudan’s Military Intelligence (MI) has released at least 32 citizens who were detained for attempting to travel abroad through illegal means. The 32 young men were arrested at the border between South Sudan and Sudan, allegedly attempting to migrate westward, particularly to Europe.
The MI suspected that the young men might have been victims of human trafficking or criminals on the run. They were arrested for lacking proper travel documents and were later transferred to the 3rd Infantry Division in Wun-yiik, Aweil East County, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State. The MI advised young people to avoid desperate journeys and to be resilient.
Reports indicated that the detainees came from various regions: 20 from Bentiu, 5 from Aweil, 4 from Jonglei, 2 from Lakes, and 1 from Warrap. They were caught at the border in the Kiir Adeem area and transferred to the 3rd Infantry Division in Wun-yiik. The division then sent them to Juba, where they were held in the MI Detention Facility for 5 months while their case was being analyzed.
These young men were arrested for not possessing valid travel documents, and the MI suspected they had committed crimes, such as human trafficking, and were trying to leave the country illegally. They were released on January 28, 2025, and handed over to their respective state coordinators in Juba.
The MI warned the youth in the country to be cautious of falling victim to child trafficking and emphasized that they could not allow young people to be subjected to such cruel acts. The Military Intelligence also warned against desperate journeys that could endanger their lives.
Meanwhile, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State Coordinator in Juba, Deng Lual Akok, urged young people to be resilient, saying: “Home is always your home, where you have all rights, unlike being in another country.”
