The Sudanese government has accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of setting fire to the Al-Jili oil refinery. A statement posted by the Sudanese Armed Forces on its Facebook page, which was widely circulated by media outlets, said: “The Rapid Support Forces deliberately set fire to the oil refinery in a desperate attempt to destroy the country’s infrastructure after they failed to achieve their delusions of seizing its resources and land.”
The statement vowed to pursue the RSF and cleanse the country of their presence, promising to rebuild everything destroyed by the RSF.
The official spokesperson for the Sudanese government, Khaled Al-Aysar, called on all countries and human rights organizations to designate the RSF as a terrorist group, considering the attack on the Al-Jili refinery a violation of international humanitarian law.
The Al-Jili refinery, the largest oil refining facility in Sudan, was established north of Bahri city in the 1990s and has been under the control of the RSF since the outbreak of the war in mid-April 2023.
Khartoum has witnessed fierce battles between the Sudanese army and the RSF, resulting in over 20,000 deaths and 14 million displaced persons and refugees, according to United Nations data, local authorities, and official media.
