President Salva Kiir Mayardit received a report from the Deputy Speaker of the Council of States, Mary Ayen, regarding the progress and challenges facing the Council of States in carrying out its constitutional mandate.
During the briefing, Ayen stated that some seats allocated to the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in the council have become vacant due to the deaths of some members and the severe illness of others.
She also informed the Head of State about the ongoing delays in issuing the environmental audit for oil-producing areas, which is crucial for addressing the health conditions of local residents.
The Deputy Speaker, Ayen, emphasized that the briefing was critical in identifying solutions to fundamental issues affecting the performance of the legislative body.
Following the report, the President directed the SPLM leadership in the council to work closely with the Secretary-General to address the current challenges and advance discussions on matters of national importance during their sessions, as the country prepares for general elections scheduled for next year.
