#Today, I want to share the story behind my National Costume as Mr. World South Sudan—a story of unity, resilience, and heritage. My costume, titled “The Spirit of South Sudan,” is more than just attire; it is a powerful representation of my country’s journey, culture, and identity.
Crafted from cowrie shells and beads in the colors of the South Sudan flag, the costume symbolizes pride, strength, and hope. The intricate patterns flowing across the chest and waist represent the 64 tribes of South Sudan, showcasing our diverse cultural heritage and the beauty of our unity. The traditional cowhide sandals connect me to our pastoral roots, while the cowrie crown signifies leadership, courage, and the warrior spirit that defines our people.
This costume honors the legacy of my great-grandfathers: Dhieu Alam and Anok Nyingeer from Bar el Ghazal, Jubek from Equatoria, and Ngoun Deng from Upper Nile. These were men of unmatched bravery, who faced challenges with nothing but their hands and unwavering courage. Their strength and unity inspire me to stand tall as a proud representative of South Sudan.
Winning the National Costume Competition at Mr. World was not just a recognition of its design but also an acknowledgment of the act and powerful message it conveyed. The competition is distinct from the Dance of the World, where cultural wear is celebrated. Instead, the National Costume is about telling a story—one that highlights the resilience of South Sudan, our path toward peace and unity, and the dreams of our people for a better future.
This costume blends cultural pride with modern elegance, and it reflects my commitment to showcasing South Sudan’s story to the world with dignity, strength, and pride.
