Hotel Owners File Lawsuits Against the National Transitional Committee for Unpaid Bills

Report: Emmanuel M. Garjiek
Hotels in Juba, South Sudan, have filed lawsuits against the National Transitional Committee (NTC) due to unpaid lodging and food bills.
The National Pre-Transitional Committee of the 2018 peace agreement had provided accommodation for military generals and officials following the signing of the peace deal. However, many hotels began demanding payment and evicted the officials due to unpaid bills, leading to the eviction of the NTC in March 2023.
The hotels are seeking both general and punitive damages, with the outstanding amounts potentially reaching up to $150 million in compensation. The National Pre-Transitional Committee was staying at the South Sudan Hotel in March 2023 and was evicted due to unpaid rent arrears totaling $6 million.
The hotel owners claim that they are natural persons in the East African community, operating in an EAC partner state, and own limited liability companies established under the laws of the Republic of South Sudan.
