Youth from Lafon County in Eastern Equatoria assaulted the Secretary of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), accusing him of obstructing their demand for the removal of the Commissioner.

According to media reports, Manquesto Akuashi Aguire, the Commissioner of Lafon, was previously attacked by the youth of the county months ago, and they demanded his removal from office, but no action has been taken so far.

Andrew Gala, the SPLM Secretary, told Radio Tamazuj that the youth attacked him, accusing him of being an obstacle to their cause in removing Governor Akuashi. No one has been arrested due to the lack of police presence in the area.

“I was attacked by youth from Borquilo in Tar. They beat me severely, and I don’t know why they attacked me. I was just moving outside the residential area around 7:00 PM.” He added.

“Two young men approached me, one of them asked where I was going. I told them I was going to relieve myself. They told me not to go, as that area was unsafe. I didn’t know they were taking me to a place where a large group of youth was gathered.”, He continued.

Andrew explained that he was beaten at the local government complex, but no arrests were made due to the lack of police officers in the area.

Andrew clarified that the attack almost sparked community violence, but he managed to resolve the issue peacefully. He said, “I believe the attack was politically motivated because I remember them saying they wanted to remove the governor, and when that didn’t happen, they said I was the obstacle. But I told them I had no role in it, and I asked them how I could work on removing the governor.”

The SPLM spokesperson in Eastern Equatoria, Eiwak Siro Silvio, condemned the attack on the party secretary. He stated that the assault was aimed at intimidating a party member and urged the police to arrest the perpetrators.

Silvio added that the party’s secretariat strongly condemns the attack on the SPLM Secretary in Lafon, comrade Andrew Gala, who has held this position since 2010. He was attacked Thursday evening when a group of unknown youth surrounded and beat him, causing him to lose consciousness. Akuashi, the Commissioner of Lafon County, confirmed the incident but stated that he does not have sufficient information about it as he is currently in Torit
