The education authority in Nimule town in Magwi County in Eastern Equatoria State said the lack of transport to deliver the South Sudan “Primary Certificate Exams.” to their candidates to the centres remains a challenge.
Magwi County is facing the problem of lack of transport which may result in students sitting for the Basic Education Certificate this year not being able to take their exams.
Odumtola Hillary, the Chief Inspector of Education in Nimule, said they are facing many challenges including transportation as the examinations of the Grade 8 candidates are approaching. Grade 8 examinations in South Sudan will start on November 18, 2024. According to the Department of General Education, Nimule Municipal Council may not be able to go and collect examination papers from Torit as usual.
Hillary said: “The transportation we have is self-managed, the ministry has not sent us any means of transportation since then. We are complaining that we cannot go to Torit to collect our examinations. If the ministry thinks well, they should bring the examinations to us here and then we can give them to our children because we do not have any means of transportation. Before, we used to send our education kits here, which are now very few, only three. When I spoke to them this morning, they said they have no means to help bring the examinations from Torit because the donors say the road from Nimule to Torit is not good so they cannot go.” Hillary complains that her office does not have computers and they process office documents from the market which can lead to delays in immediate communication.
She added that the Nimule Education Department and the State Ministry of Education are still sending information in envelopes with the drivers of the vehicles, which could compromise the information.
“We have very limited communication capabilities and it is difficult to send some reports to Torit, there is no proper channel, because if you send it by car, you have to pay the driver N15,000 depending on the situation, everything from Nimule Municipal Council when it goes to Torit will be delayed, or something will be sent from Torit to us here which delays the information.
” Despite the challenges facing the office, the Nimule Chief Inspector of Education said that candidates sitting in Nimule are well prepared for their examinations.
“We have placed the candidates in their centres and they are waiting for the instructions on the examination,” he said.
“We are preparing our candidates for the Basic Education Certificate to sit for the 2024 examinations, they are fully prepared as we have placed them in their designated centres and if the examination comes on Friday, they will be guided by external invigilators who will come from the state with our supervisors here and on Monday they will start sitting for the examinations,”
Hillary, the Inspector of Education, told local radio station Emmanuel in a telephone interview on Wednesday
