The longest war in Africa

By .Emmanuel.M. Garjiek

For decades, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been enmeshed in a complicated web of hostilities that have had a substantial impact on both the country and the larger Great Lakes region of Africa. These conflicts have a variety of basic reasons, including rivalry for resources, ethnic tensions, and old grievances.

The fight for control of the DRC’s abundant natural resources, especially minerals like diamonds, gold, and coltan, is one of the main reasons for violence there. These resources are abundant in the DRC, which has drawn both local and foreign entities looking to take use of them. As different armed groups fight for control of profitable mining areas, this competition frequently results in violence. Furthermore, colonialism’s impact and the ensuing
These disputes have wide-ranging and significant effects. Millions of people have died in the DRC’s bloodiest conflict since World War II, and countless more have been impacted by violence, displacement, and violations of human rights. Millions of people are internally displaced and in severe need of aid due to the humanitarian situation. In addition to impeding economic growth, the persistent violence has continued to feed the cycle of instability and poverty.

Furthermore, the DRC’s wars have an impact on neighboring nations in the Great Lakes region in addition to its own boundaries. Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi are among the nations that have become unstable due to the refugee crisis, cross-border militias, and the spread of violence. The participation of numerous multinational entities, each with their own goals, further complicates regional dynamics. One of the main actors in the ongoing violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is the M23 rebel group, formally known as the March 23 Movement. The group was formed in 2012 after emerging from a prior battle and has subsequently participated in a number of military operations against the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. “M23” is a reference to the date of a peace deal that was signed on March 23, 2009, and that the government allegedly did not uphold.

The M23 has stepped up its military activities in recent months, which has caused conflict in the region of North Kivu to flare up again. The conflict has been characterized by intense combat between government forces and M23 fighters, which has led to a large number of civilian casualties. According to reports, the rebels have taken control of the Goma city which is the second larger town the in the country

The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), under the leadership of the president Félix Tshisekedi who was officially sworn in as a president on 24 January 24, 2019 , has accused neighboring nations, especially Rwanda, of providing support to the M23 group. This allegation has fueled tensions in regional relations. The international community has urged for dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict; however, efforts have been obstructed by persistent issues related to governance, ethnic strife, and the competition for the region’s abundant natural resources. As the situation develops, the humanitarian crisis worsens, with thousands of individuals fleeing their homes and seeking shelter in overcrowded camps. The ongoing conflict not only jeopardizes the stability of the DRC but also presents challenges for the wider Great Lakes region, underscoring the critical need for a holistic approach to peace and security.
finally, a mix of historical grievances, ethnic tensions, and competition for resources fuel the wars in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For the DRC and the entire Great Lakes area, the ensuing humanitarian catastrophe and regional instability present serious obstacles that call for a coordinated effort from local and international partners to address the underlying causes and strive toward lasting peace.
