Heavy Artillery Bombardment Hits El Fasher in North Darfur

News Agencies

The city of El Fasher in North Darfur was subjected to heavy artillery bombardment, with airstrikes targeting the locations of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) gatherings. Residents of the city, which is under the control of the Sudanese Army and military forces known as the Joint Forces, complained about the repeated attacks carried out by the RSF, which have led to loss of life and destruction of infrastructure.

The military operations in El Fasher intensified concurrently with statements made by Minister of Minerals Mohamed Bashir Abu Numo on January 27, revealing that five large Ilyushin aircraft had arrived, carrying modern weapons and drones capable of flying for long hours, targeting and hitting objectives with high precision.

Minister Abu Numo called on the military leadership of the army and the Joint Forces to deploy a strike force to the Darfur region, as, according to him, the war had ended in the capital Khartoum and in Al-Jazeera state.

According to Sudanese media reports from El Fasher, intense artillery shelling and airstrikes were carried out east of the city by the air force against RSF forces.

The Sudanese Army and the Joint Forces were able to repel the RSF attacks, which have been aiming to intercept supplies coming from Libya last week via trucks crossing the desert, in addition to the arrival of aircraft loaded with weapons from Hassan Jamous Airport in N’Djamena, according to the Sudanese Minister of Minerals.

An eyewitness, who lives in El Fasher, said that the military factions on the ground, including the army, the Joint Forces, and volunteers, are on high alert to repel expected waves of attacks by the RSF. He added, “It feels like there is a race against time to seize El Fasher by the RSF, but what I see on the ground and the current realities suggest that El Fasher will not be easily taken by Hamidti’s forces.”

The attack on the Saudi Hospital in El Fasher on Friday, which resulted in the deaths of 70 people, received widespread condemnation from the regional and international community. The condemnation included statements from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United States, the United Nations, Iran, Pakistan, and Venezuela.
