The Sudanese-Egyptian committee tasked with studying the connection of the two countries through railways has signed the grant agreement provided by the Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development, valued at 750,000 Kuwaiti Dinars to finance the project. The first meeting of the committee was held with the presence of the transport ministers from both countries.
Lieutenant General Kamel Al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister of Egypt and Minister of Industry and Transport, confirmed that the scope of the study includes the project’s consultant reviewing the proposed alternatives for the rail connection between the two countries, from Abu Simbel to Abu Hamed, passing through Wadi Halfa. This decision was made in light of Sudan’s request to extend the study’s scope to include the Wadi Halfa / Abu Hamed line to maximize the economic feasibility and benefits of the project. He also noted that a unified decision has been issued by both sides to form the committee responsible for following up on the study of the project.
The two ministers agreed that the railway connection cooperation reflects the strong and historical relations between the two brotherly countries, emphasizing the project’s contribution to facilitating the movement of passengers and goods between them and supporting the service for residential, agricultural, and commercial areas along the route.
The Egyptian Minister of Transport confirmed that the project is an important part of the link with Sudan, which is connected through three land ports on the Egyptian-Sudanese border: (Qastal, Argeen, Ras Hadirbah), in addition to the navigational route (Aswan-Wadi Halfa) via Lake Nasser. He also mentioned that the Egyptian Ministry of Transport is working jointly with the Sudanese side to develop the Wadi Halfa port by constructing a new 400-meter river dock.
The Sudanese Minister of Transport, who is temporarily in charge, thanked Egypt’s leadership, government, and people for their continuous and active cooperation with Sudan in various sectors. He confirmed that this project serves the interests of both brotherly countries, praising the significant cooperation from Egypt’s Ministry of Transport in implementing this vital project, which represents a major qualitative leap in cooperation between the two countries in the transport sector.
