The United States has announced visa restrictions on several members of South Sudan\u2019s transitional government, accusing them of obstructing the implementation of the peace agreement and undermining stability efforts in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement issued Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the measures target individuals responsible for delaying the implementation of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement, which was signed to end years of civil war in South Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Washington warned that the continued delay in implementing the agreement threatens to push the country back into large-scale conflict, noting that the transitional government has hindered the execution of the deal\u2019s provisions over the past years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The U.S. administration also accused officials and entities involved in corruption of diverting public funds and misusing international aid intended to support citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The U.S. State Department explained that the visa restrictions were imposed under the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act in order to hold accountable those accused of undermining the ceasefire and engaging in corruption linked to the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The United States reaffirmed its continued support for the people of South Sudan, stressing that it will continue using available diplomatic and legal measures to promote accountability among officials and leaders accused of threatening peace and stability in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
