A two-week free eye treatment and surgery camp is underway in Malakal, the capital of Upper Nile State, offering services to more than 1,150 patients from across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initiative, launched on May 7 under the supervision of the deputy state governor, is organized by Caritas Diocese of Malakal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Upper Nile State Information Minister Peter Ngwojo Akwiny told Radio Tamazuj that the program is a major step toward improving access to eye care in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cPeople are coming from across the 13 counties of the state and even from the northern parts of neighboring Jonglei State. A total of 1,150 people will receive eye treatment, including surgery and corrective glasses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Among the beneficiaries is Simon Nyareth, a local youth leader in Malakal, who described the campaign as a relief for many patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cMany patients have problems such as cataracts and glaucoma. I went there on Friday, and the following day I received glasses and took my uncle for a successful surgery. We are very thankful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Nyareth urged authorities and partners to establish a permanent eye care unit in Malakal to serve residents who cannot afford to travel outside the state for treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The campaign has drawn patients from across Upper Nile and neighboring areas, highlighting the urgent need for accessible and affordable eye health services in South Sudan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
