The Commissioner of Mayom County in Unity State, Maj. Gen. James Liliy Kuol Diew<\/strong>, announced a notable decline in poverty and hunger levels<\/strong> across the county during the month of October<\/strong>, pointing out that this year\u2019s farming season has shown a significant increase in agricultural production<\/strong> among the Bul community<\/strong>, despite flooding that affected some areas in Nor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commissioner explained that the improvement in crop yields<\/strong> was the result of joint efforts between farmers and local authorities<\/strong> to enhance agricultural activity and expand cultivated areas, affirming that the county has begun to reap the rewards of the hard work invested over previous seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the last spring season, the commissioner had urged farmers in the Bul community<\/strong> to increase their cultivated land area and intensify their efforts<\/strong> toward achieving food self-sufficiency<\/strong>, praising the spirit of cooperation and perseverance shown by the farmers this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commissioner Kuol stated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBehind every major decision in food security stands a wise leader with countless ideas driving positive change.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He reaffirmed his commitment to continue working tirelessly to improve economic conditions, achieve social justice, promote cultural reform, and advance development<\/strong> within the county. He also encouraged farmers to maintain appropriate farming systems<\/strong> based on soil type, climate, available resources, and agricultural goals<\/strong>, outlining the main cropping systems currently practiced in the region:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Mono-Cropping:<\/strong> Cultivating a single crop, such as maize or millet, commonly practiced in Nyideang<\/strong> and Dejul<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Mixed Cropping:<\/strong> Growing multiple crops together, such as maize, groundnuts, okra, and beans.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Inter-Cropping:<\/strong> Planting two or more crops in the same field in a defined row pattern, such as maize with cassava or groundnuts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Crop Rotation:<\/strong> Alternating the cultivation of different crops on the same land to improve soil fertility and boost productivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Relay Cropping:<\/strong> Planting a second crop before the first crop is harvested, such as cowpea in maize fields before harvest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Sequential Cropping:<\/strong> Planting a new crop immediately after harvesting the previous one, such as tomatoes or yams after maize.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Kuol emphasized that the agricultural sector remains a cornerstone of the local economy<\/strong>, saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
