Leaders based in Juba must demonstrate their commitment to peaceful dialogue and prioritize the interests of the people of South Sudan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tensions escalated in Juba following the arrest of four senior Sudan People&#8217;s Liberation Army (SPLA) officers and the Minister of Petroleum, Puot Kang Chol, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the military officials detained in the SPLA were Generals Gabriel Dub Lam, Kuang Gatkuoth Kiryok, Wesley Wilibi, and Ashab Khames Fahal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The arrests came amid rising tensions after the White Army seized a base of the South Sudan People\u2019s Defense Forces in the Nasser County of Upper Nile State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government accused the White Army of allying with the SPLA, which is led by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, a claim that the opposition denies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information Minister Michael Makuei stated that the arrests were carried out because the individuals were \u201ccontradicting the law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added, \u201cThey were arrested because they were contradicting the law. There\u2019s no joke about that. What we need is security. If anyone is arrested, there\u2019s a reason for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar are working to implement a peace agreement signed in 2018, aimed at ending years of civil war.
