The Chair of the Civil Society Network in Northern Bahr El Ghazal, Bulis Nguak Deng, has called on the Governor of Northern Bahr El Ghazal to intervene and release civil activist Dut Kuot Akok from prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the petition letter, it was stated that the members of the Civil Society Network in Northern Bahr El Ghazal are deeply concerned about the arrest and detention of political activist Dut Kuot Akok by the National Security Service in the state without following proper legal procedures. Deng mentioned that the detainee had been charged with defamation without concrete evidence. It was revealed that Dut Kuot was arbitrarily arrested without being granted his fundamental legal rights during detention, and he has been detained for over 25 days. This constitutes a violation of the principle of justice as outlined in national law and international human rights law. This act directly contradicts the constitutional protections guaranteed to all citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Civil Society Chair also emphasized that, as representatives of civil society organizations, they strongly advocate for justice, integrity, and the rule of law. The arbitrary detention of an individual without due process undermines the very foundation of the country\u2019s legal system and erodes public trust in public institutions in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The civil society group is requesting the Governor to take decisive action and immediately release political activist Dut Kuot Akok from detention, and to drop all charges against him. The statement urges the Governor to withdraw the criminal case he filed against Dut Kuot, ensure that he is provided legal representation, and allow him the opportunity to defend himself against the charges. It also calls for adherence to legal procedures and due process in all future detentions and arrests as mandated by the Constitution of South Sudan and international human rights standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bulis Nguak Deng, Chair of the Civil Society Organizations, said: “We believe these actions are necessary to uphold the integrity of our legal system and protect the rights and freedoms of all citizens who exercise their right to freedom of expression.
