He emphasized that the new taxes do not affect these goods.

This statement came after market prices of some goods rose, with reports of protests by truck drivers at the Nimule border point due to the new taxes imposed on trucks.

Akuei told local media in Juba: “All food commodities, all essential goods such as maize flour, Azam, fuel, and oil, are not part of this law. Their taxes have not been increased; they remain as they were under the 2022/2023 Financial Act, so nothing has been altered.”

He added that the taxes were raised on goods already in the country, such as fish, as well as non-essential items like alcohol. “The only things that have been raised here are two main items: goods already in South Sudan, such as fish produced in the Nile, bottled water, and alcohol (spirits).”

The Commissioner General also revealed that the exchange rate for the taxes will be calculated according to the current bank rate, adding that this is the only change in the 2024/2025 Financial Act. He said: “The only thing that has changed is that this law, as I have read, stipulates that the exchange rate should be fixed according to the South Sudan Central Bank’s circular. This is the only thing that has been touched in this law.”

Akuei pointed out that South Sudan still imposes the lowest taxes in the East African region, saying: “With the 2024/2025 Financial Act, South Sudan remains the country with the lowest taxes. Go to Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and all these other countries have much higher taxes.”

He added: “I mentioned this: How much is a V8 in Juba? USD 120,000, USD 130,000. How much is a V8 in Nairobi? USD 230,000, USD 225,000, because it is taxed 100% there, but here it is only 35%.”

He expressed the Revenue Authority’s commitment to continuing engagement with citizens to help them understand the new taxes.

Recently, the Chairperson of the Chamber of Commerce for Central Equatoria expressed concern about the implementation of the new tax rates in the 2024/2025 Financial Act.

With prices already soaring, he warned that the additional costs could push the country into hyperinflation, leaving citizens struggling to meet their needs.

In an interview with Citizen Number One, an English-speaking media outlet, Robert Pitia, the Chairperson of the Chamber of Commerce for Central Equatoria State, warned that the increased tax rates in the 2024/2025 fiscal year could lead to a sharp rise in prices, further straining the already fragile economy. He said: “Higher tax rates will never improve the economy of any country; they create hyperinflation. We also have issues with our currency, and we rely on imported goods.”

He added that such taxes, in addition to the price increases affecting ordinary citizens, could discourage investors who may want to invest their resources in the country’s economy.

Under the new tax system, a wide range of goods and services, including imported goods, locally manufactured products, hotel and restaurant services, and telecommunications, will be subject to an 18% sales tax.

Juba: News AgenciesThe Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority in South Sudan, Simon Akuei Deng, clarified that the 2024/2025 Financial Act did not increase taxes on food and fuel,…

[13,6

post-1504","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economy","category-local-news
["GET
