The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Dr. James Pitia Morgan, summoned the Ambassadors of Germany, Japan, Norway and the United States over a joint statement issued by the four diplomatic missions on August 26, 2026, concerning political developments in South Sudan.
During the meeting, the Minister conveyed the Government’s concern over the content of the statement, saying that its wording and substance were considered inappropriate and potentially divisive, particularly as the country prepares to enter the electoral period.
Morgan stressed the importance of national ownership in addressing the country’s national affairs and called on diplomatic missions to adhere to established diplomatic norms and principles, including respect for the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of the receiving State.
The Foreign Minister further emphasized that sensitive political issues should be discussed and addressed through appropriate official diplomatic channels rather than through public statements that could affect the country’s internal political environment.
The Minister reaffirmed the Government of South Sudan’s commitment to implementing the Revitalized Peace Agreement and continuing preparations for the elections.
Morgan called on all political parties and stakeholders, as well as regional and international partners, to support efforts aimed at creating a peaceful, calm and conducive environment for the electoral process as the country approaches the elections.
The four ambassadors were given an opportunity to clarify the basis of the joint statement and explain the motivations and objectives behind its issuance by their respective missions.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
