Families and children in Akobo County, Jonglei State, have regained access to essential nutrition services after several months of interruption, following a recent rapid response mission conducted by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The response included the provision of life-saving nutrition services to children and families, as well as screening for acute malnutrition. Children identified as requiring support were referred to appropriate treatment and care services.
UNICEF teams also provided parents, caregivers and community members with information on the importance of early detection of malnutrition, timely access to treatment, and the role of proper nutrition in protecting children’s health and development.
UNICEF said the response represents an important step for families who had been without nutrition services since January, noting that the restoration of these services gives children an opportunity to receive the care they need.
The organization emphasized that cooperation among partners, local communities and health workers is essential to ensuring that nutrition services reach children in need and help them get a healthier start in life.
The efforts come as some communities in Jonglei continue to face significant challenges in accessing essential health and nutrition services, increasing the need for sustained humanitarian assistance and support for vulnerable children and families.
