President of the Republic of South Sudan, H.E. General Salva Kiir Mayardit, has reaffirmed that peace and national unity remain key priorities at the current stage, as the country continues preparations for the general elections scheduled for December 2026.
The remarks came during President Kiir’s meeting on Wednesday with Presidential Advisor for Peace Peter Charleman Cawach. The two discussed developments in the peace process and ongoing efforts to strengthen stability and national reconciliation in the country.
The meeting focused on the importance of supporting peace initiatives and aligning them with preparations for the upcoming elections, in order to create a stable political environment that would enable the country to move into a new phase based on peace and national unity.
President Kiir commended the plans and initiatives presented by the Peace Advisor, stressing the need for peace to remain a central pillar of the country’s political process, alongside the promotion of national dialogue and responsible political participation.
He also emphasized the importance of creating broader space for dialogue among the various components of society to help address current challenges, overcome differences, and move the country toward greater stability and national cohesion.
The President expressed his support for the Peace Advisor’s initiatives and directed that meetings and activities related to peace, reconciliation, and the promotion of national unity continue.
For his part, Presidential Advisor for Peace Peter Charleman Cawach reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting peace and unity, calling on the people of South Sudan to overcome their differences and work together in the national interest.
Speaking to journalists, Charleman said, “The first priority for the country is to strengthen peace and unity,” stressing the importance of concerted national efforts during the current period.
Charleman was appointed Presidential Advisor for Peace in March 2026. He is responsible for advising on peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and national unity, as well as supporting dialogue, reconciliation, and efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in South Sudan.
