The Governor of Unity State, Dr. Joseph Manytuil, yesterday inspected the forces assembly area in Pakur, Rubkona County, to assess the progress of the official integration of forces that were formerly affiliated with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) and other opposition groups in the state.
The integration process is being carried out under the command of Lt. Gen. Simon Maguek Gai, who declared the forces’ allegiance to the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), under the leadership of President Salva Kiir Mayardit, in 2023.
The integration is regarded as an important step in the Unity State Government’s efforts to end recurring military confrontations and promote peace and stability in the state, amid concerns over the presence of parallel forces that have contributed to continued security tensions.
According to the announced arrangements, the forces will be integrated into a number of regular institutions, including the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces, the National Police Service, the National Prisons and Correctional Service, Civil Defence, the Wildlife Service, and the National Security Service.
The governor’s visit underscored the importance of completing the integration process in a manner that contributes to unifying the state’s security and military institutions and strengthening stability across Unity State.
