The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) have announced the successful execution of a large-scale security operation in the New Site area and several residential neighborhoods across Juba, resulting in the arrest of a number of individuals suspected of involvement in burglary and shop break-in cases, as part of ongoing efforts to combat crime and strengthen security in the capital.
Commander of the New Site Base, Brig. Gen. Lual Akon Kenyang, said the operation targeted individuals suspected of participating in a series of robberies that have affected the area over the past several months. He noted that the operation forms part of a broader security strategy aimed at curbing criminal activities and enhancing stability.
According to security officials who spoke to the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), the New Site area recorded 31 incidents of shop break-ins and thefts in less than a year. The rise in such crimes prompted security agencies to intensify surveillance, intelligence gathering, and investigations, culminating in the latest operation.
Brig. Gen. Peter Misseri, Intelligence Officer for Administration, Personnel, and Finance at the SSPDF General Headquarters in Bilpham, said the operation led to the arrest of several juveniles along with 13 adults. He added that some of the suspects were engaged in street vending, while others had no stable source of income.
He further stated that preliminary investigations helped identify individuals suspected of organizing criminal activities. Some of those arrested have already provided statements to investigators, although he declined to disclose further details in order to protect the integrity of the ongoing legal process.
Misseri confirmed that all detainees will be handed over to the South Sudan National Police Service for further investigation and legal proceedings, emphasizing that the operation was conducted in accordance with the law and in coordination with the relevant authorities.
The operation is part of a wider security campaign being implemented by authorities in Juba to combat crime, strengthen public security, and maintain law and order as the country prepares for upcoming national events.
Authorities also urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities or movements, reaffirming their commitment to continuing security operations aimed at protecting lives, property, and maintaining peace and stability.
