The Chief Administrator of the Abyei Special Administrative Area, Justice Charles Abyei Jok, has affirmed that Abyei’s participation in South Sudan’s General Elections scheduled for December 2026 is a constitutional and civic right guaranteed to the people of the region.
Jok made the remarks during a meeting in Juba with Mr. Guang Cong, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa.
According to a statement issued by the Abyei Special Administrative Area Administration, the meeting reviewed the current situation in Abyei, with particular focus on the region’s participation in the upcoming elections. The Chief Administrator stressed that the people of Abyei had previously participated in the 2010 elections without objection from the Sudanese government at the time.
Jok explained that the participation of Abyei citizens in the electoral process falls within their constitutional rights, expressing the administration’s commitment to ensuring that residents are able to exercise this right during the forthcoming elections.
The discussions also addressed relations between the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya communities. The Chief Administrator highlighted the positive relationship between the two communities and noted the administration’s continued efforts to promote peaceful coexistence and stability in the area.
He further renewed his call for continued dialogue between South Sudan and Sudan to reach a final resolution on the Abyei issue and determine the area’s final status, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the constitutional rights of the people of Abyei.
The statement added that the meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation headquarters in Juba and was attended by a number of relevant officials.
