The National Youth Leadership, Peace and Security Forum has officially opened in Juba, bringing together youth leaders, government representatives, faith-based organizations, civil society actors, and development partners to discuss pathways for strengthening democratic governance, social cohesion, and sustainable peace in South Sudan.
The forum is organized by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), through the Office of the IGAD Youth Envoy, in partnership with the South Sudan National Youth Union (SSNYU), the South Sudan Council of Churches (SSCC), and the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC).
Held under the theme, “Youth Voices for Peace: Shaping South Sudan’s Democratic Transition, Social Cohesion and Economic Future,” the event seeks to promote meaningful youth participation in peacebuilding, governance, and national development processes.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan and Chairperson of the Economic Cluster, H.E. Prof. Dr. Gen. James Wani Igga, described young people as a cornerstone of the country’s future, emphasizing that their role extends beyond benefiting from peace to actively contributing to its creation, protection, and promotion.
IGAD also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting youth engagement in peace and decision-making processes. Delivering remarks on behalf of IGAD Executive Secretary H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Dr. Victoria Anib, Head of the IGAD Mission in South Sudan, said the organization remains dedicated to amplifying youth voices and fostering inclusive dialogue as part of South Sudan’s journey toward lasting peace and stability.
Meanwhile, Rev. Dr. Justin Badi Arama, speaking on behalf of the South Sudan Council of Churches and the All Africa Conference of Churches, called for greater national unity and reconciliation. He reaffirmed the commitment of both organizations to strengthening their partnership with IGAD in advancing peacebuilding efforts and promoting meaningful youth participation in democratic governance and development.
The forum is expected to produce recommendations aimed at expanding youth involvement in peace, security, and development initiatives, while reinforcing their role in supporting South Sudan’s democratic transition and building a more stable and prosperous future.
