Authorities at Pariang Prison in the Ruweng Administrative Area have launched a new prison farm aimed at strengthening food security within the correctional facility while providing inmates with rehabilitation opportunities and practical agricultural skills.
The initiative is being implemented through a partnership involving the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and other partners to support agricultural and productive initiatives in correctional institutions across the country.
As part of the project, UNMISS provided agricultural tools and seeds to help establish the farm, contributing to increased food production and improved self-sufficiency within the prison.
Speaking during the launch, the prison director, Captain Turabi, said the support came at a critical time after food stocks from the previous harvest had been exhausted. He reaffirmed the prison administration’s commitment to making full use of the institution’s agricultural land to boost food production.
He added that involving inmates in agricultural activities not only helps improve food availability but also equips them with practical vocational skills that support their rehabilitation and prepare them for successful reintegration into society upon completion of their sentences.
The project forms part of the joint efforts of the Government of South Sudan and its international partners to strengthen food security and support rehabilitation and correctional programs in prisons across South Sudan.
