The Governor of Jonglei State, Dr. Riek Gai Kok, has extended his condolences to the families of victims of the attack that targeted the Duk Payuel area, which left 17 civilians dead in an incident attributed to armed individuals suspected to be from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area.
The governor’s visit came days after a similar visit by the Commissioner of Twic East County, James Magok Mabiei, accompanied by a number of traditional leaders and youth representatives. The delegation expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and called for strengthened community cohesion and support for peace efforts.
During the visit, Ador Thon, speaking on behalf of the governor, conveyed the condolences of the Jonglei State Government to the families of the victims and the local community. He strongly condemned the attack that killed 17 civilians, including youth leader Thon Biliu Bol, describing it as a criminal act targeting innocent people and threatening security and stability.
The state government also condemned repeated attacks on humanitarian organizations and civilian vehicles, as well as incidents targeting the John Dau Foundation (JDF), which implements humanitarian and development programs in Jonglei State, including areas in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area. The government stressed the need to protect humanitarian workers and ensure they can carry out their duties without threats or violence.
The governor reaffirmed the Jonglei State Government’s commitment to strengthening security and protecting civilians, and to working with relevant authorities to identify those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice. He also urged all communities to reject violence and support peace and reconciliation efforts as the only path toward lasting peace and stability in the state.
