World Vision South Sudan has announced the implementation of a sanitation project in Panyikang County, Upper Nile State, aimed at improving Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services for families affected by conflict and flooding. The initiative is funded by the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SSHF).
According to the organization, the project has so far included the construction of 30 latrines in Tonga Payam, helping to improve health conditions for displaced families while enhancing their safety and dignity, particularly for women and children who face increased risks due to the lack of adequate sanitation facilities.
World Vision stated that these facilities are part of a broader plan to construct 208 latrines across local communities, schools, and health facilities in Panyikang County. The initiative forms part of a WASH program designed to provide essential water, sanitation, and hygiene services to more than 50,000 people affected by conflict and flooding.
The organization also shared the story of one of the beneficiaries, Mary Ayul, who was forced to flee her home in Nyilwal with her five children after severe flooding and seek refuge in Tonga Payam. She said that access to a latrine has provided her family with a safer environment, made waste disposal easier, and helped preserve her dignity and privacy as a woman.
World Vision emphasized that improving sanitation services is a vital component of protecting public health, preventing the spread of disease, restoring dignity to affected communities, and supporting humanitarian recovery efforts in crisis-affected areas.
