Civil society activist Edmund Yakani has strongly criticized the Juba City Council for the deteriorating state of infrastructure, specifically pointing to the growing number of potholes on the city’s internal roads, which he says have become a major obstacle to movement and a daily burden on residents.
In a statement published on the Aweil News Agency page, Yakani called on the City Council to utilize tax revenues collected from citizens and businesses for road rehabilitation. He warned that the continued neglect of infrastructure would only worsen public hardship and negatively affect both economic and social activities in the capital.
“The general condition of infrastructure in Juba City is clearly worsening, adding to the daily struggles of the people,” Yakani said. “We’ve observed a large number of potholes across city streets, and we urge the council to allocate available resources to fix and improve these roads.”
He further emphasized that improving infrastructure, particularly the road network, is one of the most basic rights of citizens and a true test of the local authorities’ commitment to transparency and responsible management of public funds.
Yakani’s remarks come at a time when public dissatisfaction is mounting over the declining quality of essential services in Juba, amid growing calls for greater accountability and improved performance by municipal institutions.
