The United Arab Emirates has provided food and relief supplies to many countries around the world, solidifying its position as a global humanitarian leader. The UAE’s Minister of State, Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, led a diplomatic delegation to the refugee camps in South Sudan to provide humanitarian assistance and to understand the challenges faced by refugees and how to help address them.
The Gorom refugee camp in Juba is home to refugees from Ethiopia, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Sudan. The camp is facing difficulties due to the suspension of food rations and a lack of essential services.
Delegates from regional organizations, humanitarian agencies, ambassadors, and the diplomatic corps discussed strengthening humanitarian responses and long-term solutions for refugees in South Sudan.
On March 7th, the UAE inaugurated the Madhol Field Hospital in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, South Sudan, with a 100-bed capacity and several specialized clinics to treat approximately two million people from the host community, South Sudanese returnees from Sudan, and Sudanese refugees. This hospital is the third healthcare facility built by the UAE to provide medical services to Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries.
The UAE also announced an additional USD 200 million in aid during the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan held in Addis Ababa. Since the start of the crisis, the UAE has provided USD 3.5 billion in humanitarian aid over the past ten years, dispatched 160 planes carrying relief supplies, and distributed 12,000 tons of food, medical supplies, and relief materials to the people of Sudan affected by the ongoing conflict.
